FAQ about Pilates

How long will it take for me to notice changes in my body?
We love this quote from Joseph H. Pilates, “In 10 sessions you will feel a difference, in 20 sessions you will see a difference and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body!” (PMA®, 2006). However, everybody is different. Your dedication to a consistent practice will greatly determine how quickly you will notice positive changes in your body.

Will Pilates flatten my mid-section?   Yes! The Pilates work, strengthening and lengthening core muscles will result in a flatter, firmer and thinner mid-section.

Will I be able to perform these exercises with existing injuries?
Pilates is restorative to physical fitness and as such can be part of the healing process. By correcting muscular imbalances and movement patterns, Pilates can help with both recovery and prevention of injuries. The movements of Pilates are purposeful and low-impact, stretching while strengthening the muscles supporting your spine and other joints. However, if you've had an injury or a recent operation, we strongly recommend and may require that you consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise program.

Can I continue weight-training and my other exercise routines while I do Pilates?
Yes! Pilates is a great addition to any exercise program. The principles of Pilates can be applied to any form of movement, enhancing and improving performance.

Will I lose weight?  Pilates can assist your weight loss goals. If you are trying to lose weight, we recommend Pilates along with aerobic exercise, since Pilates only becomes aerobic when one masters and practices the advanced work. Even in the beginning a Pilates workout will burn calories, strengthen muscles potentially leading to increased resting metabolism (i.e. burning more calories when not working out) and prepare your body overall for aerobic exercise (i.e. making cardio easier). Of course, eating a healthy diet prescribed by your nutritionist is recommended as well.

What should I wear?   Wear clothing that you are comfortable moving in. Form-fitting clothing is best so that we can help you with your form😉 Looser clothing is also acceptable but try not to wear clothing that is too loose fitting as you will be performing exercises that could cause a loose shirt to drift up the torso or loose shorts to fall open at the hip. No shoes, socks are ok, grippy socks are best.

How many times a week should I practice Pilates?   As in any physical conditioning program, to reap the full benefits, one should be practicing a minimum of 2-3 times per week. We recommend a mix of group classes and private lessons all offered at Mind Over Movement.

How do I get started?  We strongly recommend taking private lessons if you are new to Pilates using the Reformer. Check out our New Student Promotions.
